Problems:

Cultural variation

There will be different culture and manner from place to place. Conflict might happen if international students are not careful enough. Besides, people have different culture background has different taste or interest. Students finds it hard to get into the new environment partly because of the variation.

Communication barrier

It is a common issue for many international students.

Sometimes, as they have not been familiar with the new language yet, they miss or misunderstand what other people said.

Sometimes, they fail to express what they think accurately, which cause misunderstanding too.

For example, as they are not familiar with their second language they tend to use the simple words like "good" or "bad". Those words are not always helpful when one is trying to demonstrate a concept or an idea.

Furthermore, their failure of expression in each conversation is wearing their confidence, which make them "shy" to speak. It would be worse if they try to run away from the issue.

Besides, as they come so far to study, they tend to prioritise their "grades" rather than social life.  However, it could have a negative influence on improving their English if they fail to balance the time between study and social life.

Financial issues

For many international students, it is the first time for them to manage a relatively huge amount of expenditure. There are always some issues when people start to do something.

The big idea:

To provide opportunities for international students to talk to the local people via app community and campus events. We believe that it help them to feel safer and more relaxed through communication. 

Providing platforms for international students to communicate with people around them. It also provides consultation about life and solution of common issues.

An online Information survey platform.

Audience &Clients

The audience will be the international students who want to get familiar with the new city and the school life.

Universities in Wellington will be the clients of this project. The project seeks to help international students to be familiar with Wellington and the college life here, it is not enough to just talk to students in a certain college.

Poster

The post will advertise the event and the project so that students know what the project is about and where to go.

Event

When students just get to a new city, there must be many things that they want to know. The first event will be an orientation. It offers students an opportunity to ask questions.

It introduces the birds nest app. The event also helps students to download the app. Staff will encourage students to add friends to each other on the app and create community on it.

After the orientation, events organized by the university will hold each week. On one hand, it provides opportunity for students keep connecting to local people. On the other hand, it allows university to keep contact with students to better the app and the project itself.

App
The main idea of the app is to provide a platform for international students to communicate with other people. It also provides tips of study, life or financial management.
